[00:00:00] What's good in their kingdom? We're gonna be talking about a creature commandos, the DC series that just dropped on HBO max or max, the streaming app. So get ready. Cause we bought the nerd to shit out of this one.
Creature Commandos, it dropped onto Max, December 5th, it's currently at the time of this recording, we at five out of the seven episodes and it's, to me, I don't know about you guys, but to me it was a gloriously good time. Oh, I skipped over the introductions again. And I actually go back to introductions and also a a rename dark trooper, or so to speak, dark trooper is never really your name.
That was my bad. So we set it on, if you want to inform everybody. We're going to be zero cool. We're going to be zero [00:02:00] cool. Hold it down. We got zero cool going on, so let's do this shit. And of course we got Master Jushin with us. What's going on? As I was saying, Creature Commandos dropped onto the D. C. Max December 5th, and right now we're at five of the seven episodes that of dropped at the time of this recording, and I found it enjoyable and gloriously good time.
But it wasn't always like that because when they first announced creature commando, of course, you hit that would please. Really? Yeah. I was like, what the is they doing? Why would you start with something? Why would you start with that? So really An outlier of the universe that you're actually, that he wants to create.
Yes. You let him see, you watch him work with the characters you don't care about. Exactly. He thinks you care about him. And he does [00:03:00] that. And I think we've seen it time and time again. Especially with Guardians of the Galaxy. Yeah, what's his name? Absolutely peacemaker. He did it with Peacemaker.
See, now I did not watch Peacemaker, and I'm neglectful, and I gotta get my, gotta get that in. I love Peacemaker. That is hilarious. But I have to say, just like you said, I had very little hope, and very little enthusiasm for this. And I got through about the first ten minutes, and it was just like a Almost like a breath of fresh air.
I, I was so thoroughly surprised at how good it actually was. Yes. From the music to the characters, to the comedy, to the interactions all the way through. I was, it was, to me, phenomenal. It's James Gunn. I mean he also, sorry. No, because he also just, [00:04:00] he has enough nine 'cause he's got the club to also.
Continue bringing the actors along who could create these characters from the beginning. So that also was like oh, okay. And, we're going to get into it a little bit later, but the quality of the acting. Yes. Yes. Yeah. And based on who it was, really brought out more of the characters than I thought if maybe somebody else would have done it.
Yep. Always. You know what I'm saying? And I haven't. I haven't really felt this good about a DC product since they did Harley Quinn. Okay. I can see that. Which I've never watched. I haven't watched the, you mean the Harley Quinn movies or the animated series? Animated. Yeah. I haven't seen the animated series.
Four seasons in and I haven't watched it. However, seeing bits and pieces of it, clips of it, the art style reminds me of. Creature commandos not, although, yeah, absolutely. So when, [00:05:00] and I was like, okay, this reminds me of Harley Quinn. And even the humor and the sexualism also runs parallel to that show timing.
Yeah. The humor. Yeah. That really reminiscent of Harley Quinn and I thought. It wasn't an exact replica, but it was very similar. And I enjoyed the hell out of Harley Quinn. So when I got, like I said, I got it in the first ten minutes of the first episode. And I was like, this is fantastic. If it holds up throughout the rest of the episodes like this is going to be a really good time.
This is going to be a good watch. And it always was because Harley Quinn could never get out of her own way. And that's what made her such a great, flawed character. The only thing I wasn't sure of, and correct me if I'm wrong since you've seen Harley Quinn's Zero Cool, but I didn't think it was as ultra violent as Creature Commandos was.
No. No, it was not. It was violent. It was graphic. [00:06:00] But Creatures takes it to another level. It takes it to a whole nother level. on that. I got to be honest, and I commented to my daughter, we watched it together, and I was like, this is way more violent than I thought it was going to be. They upped the level on this.
Yeah, they really did. They wanted to grab your attention. You got body pieces flying, you got blood spurting, you got graphic sexual scenes. I was like, wow. Totally blown away for a DC animated flick. For a DC animated, yeah. DC animated flick, this is oh. Got another reminder, tonight is for your kid, not for your kids.
But now, thinking of where it came from or where it's continuing from, because it's supposed to continue after James Gunn's Suicide Squad, or THE Suicide Squad, which is Suicide Squad 2. And it's supposed to be a continuation after that. And as violent as that was, And then coming into this, I think he was trying to match that level.
[00:07:00] Match or exceed. Match or exceed that level. That, he honestly, he blew out the first Suicide Squad just on that intro moment and the second sequel. Cause just bringing them all together, you jump on one island and then it's just. Oh wait, she just did all that just to kill him just for the, just to make, get the second squadron to the island?
Yeah, she was a, and our boy, Dirty C. G. C. always said Amanda Waller was the coldest villain out there. Oh yeah, absolutely. Everything, she did everything to make a, her mission was the only objective that needed to get done. And she has done, she's single minded, laser focused. Anybody who got in her way, who stood in the way of her goal.
Anybody. But we've seen that. Not only through, movies and, things like, we see that in the comics too. Yeah, but, yeah. We'll talk about it later, but look at the absolute. She's single. She's singularly driven. Not to succeed. Oh, absolutely. What? And she [00:08:00] doesn't give a fuck.
Which Fudge, what you think about her? No, she don't care. She absolutely don't care. And that's, but that's the kind of villain you need sometimes. Oh, absolutely. And, technically she's not supposed to be a villain, but she really is villainous in everything that she does. Because she is so single minded.
She is laser focused. She is. I'm going to get the job done regardless. Honestly, I thought, I didn't think anybody in her support staff was going to survive after what happened, after they knocked her out. Just a lot of the villains of the squad, Starro, she ordered them out. I was like, Oh, she's going to kill everybody.
Oh, at the end of the Suicide Squad? I was expecting that too. Oh yeah, I was expecting her to kill everybody. I was like, Oh, she's going to kill everybody. I was expecting that too. Actually, you know what? I think you haven't seen peacemaker, but after suicide Squad, peacemaker continues that Yep. And then I think this Creature Commandos continues. It does peacemaker. Yeah, it does. But they both [00:09:00] touched on the suicide squad and peacemaker. . The big guy was from the support staff from the suicide squad and peacemaker the bearded one, John, I think his name was. And I'm gonna be honest with you, when I first started seeing some of the promos and the trailers for creatures.
And Amanda was in it and I was like, it's just gonna be another rehash of task force X. Like a recap, just another rehash. But uhhuh, they, the way they brought it out, the way they used the characters, the way they interconnected the story with, it's not yet 'cause it's not a rehash, it is just her evolving her mission.
Absolutely. Yeah. And like I said, it was very refreshing to see It wasn't just another suicide squad. Yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah. So I was initially puzzled when Creature Commandos was announced and I figured like, how did we get here? How did Creature Commandos start off as the first foray in James Gunn's DC universe?
Cause that's what we're going to be calling it. Calling it now [00:10:00] after Zack Snyder's was nixed in the bud and when I looked it up, it went back to 2022. CEO David Zaslav of Warner Brothers, CEO of Warner Brothers, he outright stated, I'm tired of Marvel whipping our ass when it comes to live action movies.
Maybe not in those exact words. We know it wasn't exaggerated. We know it wasn't exaggerated. This is WC, this is back that's all it was. So he was more like, if you can't beat them, poach their director and replicate the formula that they have.
And that's where James Gunn comes in. Think about it though. You want to build a universe, you want He came from a built universe. Who else are you going to have to build your universe? And let's be honest, DC has been trying really hard. They have. They've really been screwing it up. They have.
For years and years. Some of the movies had really good [00:11:00] qualities. Some of them were better than others. Because But in no way did any of those movies feel interconnected. Because Not like the X Men.
Gunn has confirmed a few things about DCU. He's stated that it's gonna reach across all medias. The live action movies is what's gonna be. And then any TV shows or video games are supposed to connect directly to the main franchises.
And that's where the where they have the voice actors. They're making sure that they're going to be able to reprise those roles in the live action TV shows, live action video games. Ala Viola Davis, who played Amanda Waller in the films and reprising her role as a voice actor for Creature Commandos.
. So we always say it follows up Suicide Squad two, [00:12:00] and in the sense that Waller finds a way around not being able to use the humans, because that was a fallout from peacemaker. My daughter was a part of the support squad for Peacemaker. And she basically, She already outed the world to all of Amanda's underdealings.
Everything that is classified, she basically let it all out there. So the whole world and government knew what she had been doing. The ramifications of that was, Okay, big snay on using humans as your little task force X. Yeah. Okay. And she gotta work around. She got her hand slapped. Yeah, she got her hand slapped, she got her hand slapped and she figured out a way around it.
But we didn't expect anything different from that character. No, she is intelligent, she is conniving, she is very capable. Hey, finding work, finding ways to make it happen. Really. Yeah. Not for plan B, yeah. And it seems, almost, seems like on [00:13:00] a Batman level, she had this plan all along.
Seems like it. Yeah, because it was a contingency. Yeah. No skin off her nose to just walk down and be like, oh, they told me I couldn't use humans, so and so she, she walked right down and said, Hey, we gonna start this one . And she seemed to be, didn't miss a step. Her and Batman seem to be on that same scheming level when you gotta come up with schemes and plans.
They seem to be on that same level of preparation and plans and contingencies. Just in case. Just in case. And I don't know if you guys have already know, but it's already been renewed for season two. I figured that and that wasn't a hard one. Yeah I'll be honest. Like I said, I saw it and I understood why I had already heard it before I had watched it Yep, that was already renewed for a season, but it was easy to understand.
Yeah, I was like, oh yeah season two for sure Okay, good reviews the action, The wit like you were saying the comedy the timing And just the story in general is like he introduced the characters. A flag's gotta take over this team that [00:14:00] his, he's gotta take over what his son started, so he didn't pick up where his son died.
And he's got a team that's more freakish than his son's team and he's gotta somehow make it work. And he's also gotta push off this princess who just wants to jump his bones every day. He turns around the corner. You didn't watch season, or not season, episodes, you haven't watched four and five yet.
I've watched four. You've watched four. By the time you get to five, it's, it starts off that way, where the princess just wants to jump his bones, but by five, it becomes something else. There's a, I don't know, I'm trying to avoid spoilers. If it has anything to do with series exhibitions, I figure you're not going to get it.
And here's why you're getting a season 2. It's got a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Come on. They're making sequels for things that have 40 percent ratings. 95%? Yeah, absolutely. [00:15:00] They've always done great animated features. They have. That's one thing that they have done. Great animated features.
Yeah, and one of the things that I did see when I was reading through some of the reviews is Someone was questioning like why did DC start this as an animated feature? If this is gonna be the launch the Kickstarter of James Gunn's universe DC universe Why would you do an animated feature this way?
And I was, I wanted to say, I wanted to reply, tell me you've never seen a DC animated feature without telling me you've never seen a DC animated feature. Pretty much, but it stands to reason, why would you kick off a new universe with a, with an animated feature? It doesn't seem right, especially it's not your main flagship characters.
It's not Batman, it's not Wonder Woman. It These are the ones that have brought in the money before he took a real chance to start his [00:16:00] universe with something like this. That's that. That's, he took direction from what was that group that was called the six or something like that, where they had cat men and they were going to against the whole society of villains.
You're talking about the sinister six. No. Was it? Is no, the What's secret six Because in the secret six you had characters that really didn't care about right dog cat man, and they redefined them I mean they made and they gave you a reason to pull for them because they were going against luther society And they were pulling and they had already at this time pulled all the villains to their side and these were just the sixth villains Who had decided?
You know screw it i'm not joining you and they were like, oh, okay Really and the society thought that they were just like You're nothing anyway, we were just trying to throw you a bone. But they didn't turn out, they turned out to be a, such a major thorn in their side. They said everybody in the foot can just take them down when they find them.
They're like, Oh, the six is over here. All right, let's go. They say everybody. [00:17:00] And I found out that a lot of the creature commandos have been around for a minute and it's not a new concept. I think the Initial run was 2014, I want to say. Okay, see I missed it then, because I haven't been reading comic books as consistent as I used to, and you're looking at also these type of characters. You say they've been, they've actually been around a lot longer. They were brought together in this kind of format back in 2014, yeah. But the actual characters, most of these characters have been around For years and years. In some form or another. We've seen Frankenstein and Creature from the Black Lagoon many other type of team and other projects before. It's not like he was a new character. Yeah. Come on. The bribe. Everybody's known about da. We found out not too long ago, [00:18:00] GI Robot, Uhhuh,
Which to me, I had no idea that G. I. Robot was an actual character. No idea. I thought it was a purely concocted new character for this particular show. Come to find out. Yeah. Just like you said. G. I. Robot's been around for a while. But, we gonna jump into that one later. But, to Spearheaded back. As far as the interconnectivity of it all, it seems like they're pushing Rick Flags Senior to the forefront because he's voiced by Frank.
Frank Gillo. Frank Gillo. Frank Gillo, and Frank Grillow is going to be in the new Superman movie. . Probably show, and he's also gonna show up in peacemaker season two. Yeah. And he's already got a lot of credit to him, to his. History already. He's been in the MCU. Crossbones he led the squad with against Captain America in Winter Soldier.
Yep. It's a great movie. That right there, look at that. You're getting people that have already been [00:19:00] in this particular fashion, this business, so they know how to portray these type of characters. Yep. Yeah. Which is a huge thing, you've got, I think we're going to get into characters a little bit later, so let's hold off on that.
Anyways, the character voices, interconnectivity, being able to move over to the live movies, live action, things like that. That just makes sense. And they needed direction like this because with Marvel, they had A. V. Arad? I don't know. Who basically was like, their creative executive producer, who basically was like, okay, When for the Marvel Studios, he basically was like, okay, this is how y'all need to, and He was like, cause they had that one sole voice, or it was either him or somebody else, That basically gave the VA or Neon what needed to be done for the movies, which is why they were such a success.
When you left it to Warner Brothers as this collective studio, you didn't know who was approving something or [00:20:00] denying it and turning it into something else. Yeah and it just falls back to the simple, they really tried, but there was no connectivity between any of the movies. They really, I think, honestly, they were just so hyped over it.
Because, honestly, I love The Man of Steel. I hands down think that Henry Cavill played his heart out as Superman, and he was great. He played a great Superman for what the world is now. For a time, what the world is now. He represents Superman as the world is. For it's a hard world.
It's not as clean cut as it used to be, like in the 80s, so he represented Superman for our society as it is. Then they got hyped up on trying to throw Batman into the jump. And then, let's, ooh, good idea. Let's have him fight Batman. And it just snowballed down there instead of just committing, because they were like, Oh, let's commit him to three movies, we're gonna have three Superman movies.
And then they were like, Ooh, we got Batman, we got Ben Affleck as Batman, let's have him fight Superman. And then it just snowballed downhill, sorry.[00:21:00]
And I think they just jumped off on every idea they had instead of actually talking. And coming up with a plan like Marvel Studios. Yeah. They never had that AV era type character that spearheaded all the interconnectivity and put it all together. That put it all together. Marvels what?
We got five, phase five and six coming to a or the Kevin Fike. Yeah, the Kevin Fike. Yeah, exactly. They didn't have that. It was just pretty much, it was pretty much like they were betting on the director. We got this popular director. We got this popular character. The movie's gonna be fine. And it wasn't.
But they didn't think of how it was going to work together. They wanted a universe. They wanted the continual story and the building and things like that. But they didn't put any effort into actually making it. Yeah. Connected. And as beautiful as Zack Snyder's Justice League was, it was confusing as F.
It was. That's because there were so many cuts out of it. Yeah. And I was like, from what I hear, or what I read, the [00:22:00] cyborg's entire arc, For him being the first time live action character in that way. Not live action He had some small appearances on TV shows But in this main feature for him to show up in that his entire story arc was chopped up So that led to the confusion they reshot the What was the main villain?
Steppenwolf they reshot that and So it was a chopped up piece of work Is what it was, which was why everyone was clamoring for the Snyder release. And it was very unfortunate that Snyder had to bow out for a little while
with what he had and put it together and it costs money and you've got to get that thing out to get out and make money so you can get that back. But yeah, when the Snyder Cut had finally come around, everybody was still so confused from all the [00:23:00] other things that was going on leading up to that point that by the time Snyder Cut got to us.
I gotta really say, it was the hype for it was it was gone. Yeah. It was gone. Really. And I agree with you. I thought it was a beautiful movie in and of itself, especially in the visuals. But the way they portrayed every single part of that, it just seemed so disjointed.
It seemed like it was just like you said, chopped up, thrown together, let's get it out the door. It goes, this thing's cost us. A ton of money. Because they were throwing the money into it, but then we're not going to push for it to be a continuity. We're not going to have a continuity. To me though, what's the point of pushing and throwing money at it if you're not going to do something with this property?
It didn't make no sense, but whatever. You had the money to do it. That was your money to call, jushin Henry Cavill was your Superman? Yeah. Alright. Did you see the new Superman trailer? Yes, I have. Alright. And? I [00:24:00] hate Guy Gardner's haircut. Everybody says that, but on the second, everybody says that, but on the same hand, they always screen for comic accuracy in these films.
Absolutely. And that's what the thing, I love about James Gunn, he has an eye for the character, he is, he did a great job with Guardians of the Galaxy, and I think he's doing a great job with this because it looks good. It looks. Like it should. He's got a green ring. He's slinging it. Hot girl was in there.
Mr. Terrific Crypto was in there. And I'm like, you know what? I'm willing to give him a chance because the dude brought us three solid guardians of the galaxies. He brought us a solid suicide squad. Even if, I don't know if you saw Brightburn, his movie about a kid and a twisted superman. I don't know what you're talking about.
Superman had been on the dark side. That was a great movie in and of itself. And I [00:25:00] was like, yo, yeah. He can do, you just gotta put your trust in and let him run. And the man hasn't failed. Right now he has not failed yet. Cause he's got a great creative mind. And he's got great people behind him right now that are helping him do this.
But, and it's not a but on him. What it is, and I had to look at a couple of things.
But he is actually pulling. Actual pins from the comics and putting them on screen. Yeah the crypto, when he falls to earth in the snow? Yeah. Straight from a panel. Yeah. When he's protecting that little girl from the explosion?
Straight from a panel. Yeah. He's actually using source material. And that's what you want, because honestly, what I Okay, so when I watched Avengers Age of Ultron, I got goosebumps in that scene where, Thor, The Vision, and Iron Man were all just going, firing laser beams at him, lighting him. I got goose bumps because as a comic enthusiast, that was what you wanted to see, cause that [00:26:00] right there was like a spread, like a three page spread in any other comic book. And I was like, this is, this is our time. I was like, this is our time, cause we can do this now? Let's see, here's the thing about it. We are a fickle community. We are. We want comic accuracy. We give you Nathan Phelan as Guy Gardner and everybody hates him.
That dude is comic accuracy. My theory on that is, they don't know. They say they're comic fans, but they've become comic fans within the last 10 15 years. So what he's drawing from, the comics that he's drawing from that took place in the 70s and 80s, they're not familiar with those type of characters.
That's where that bowl haircut comes from. So that was our Justice League International. Yeah. So when they see that on screen, translated to screen. The first initial reaction is, what the fuck is [00:27:00] this?
You gotta, just like it says, a lot of these cats are, new to the genre they're picking it up like that. So zero real quick. Superman trailer you watching it and that was great. Okay, Let me tell you this. Yeah As a character, I absolutely abhor Superman is one of the reasons why I did not read dc for A long time.
He was too clean cut No, you can't beat him. Yeah, the only person that can beat batman either Is superman? I know superman a power level type character, you know what i'm saying? There was no there was no reason to actually even get out of bed when you're going to go because you can't win against Super the only person that's going to beat superman is superman.
Yeah, I never understood that superman's in the city I would just go, I'm just gonna go, I'm gonna take my chances with Batman. Damn that. And his character has always put me off of DC and then until I finally got into a lot of the other aspects of DC and found out, hey, it's not quite as good. It's [00:28:00] not quite as, it's more interesting.
It's got very interconnected type storylines. And I'm, what I'm talking about is really from rebirth. I've gone back and I, one of my favorites is GSA. Yes. And I went back and read all that and that was, to me, phenomenal. But anyways, I digress. Superman is one of my least favorite characters in the entire industry.
But this trailer right here, and knowing that it's going to possibly lead to something that's going to be bigger, on a grander scale, I thoroughly enjoyed the trailer. Yeah. 'cause I'm like, the first thing as you said, is him weighing in the snow. And then when you roll over he's blowing, he's whistling and Superman and you're like, who?
Hell kicked his ass . Yeah. That's the first thing I wa I'm like, I want to know who beat him down. Like that. That's what I was wondering too. And at the risk. Getting off topic cuz I know we were here for creature commandos [00:29:00] but the thing about that trailer that excited me as you were saying zero It wasn't Superman because I've been saying for years and I'm gonna continue to say Stop making all these damn Batman and Superman movies because DC has The well is the well The but the well of DC's characters years, but there are so many characters, but the well of DC characters is not gonna dry up.
And James Gunn has proven that with Creature Commandos. He's proven that you can pull some characters and make a story around, which is my real love about this because all of this whole 10 my my last 10, 15 years, I haven't been reading comics because. I feel there's been a weak, a weakness in writing because people will just All I want to see is Batman, Superman, and Wolverine.
That's all I want to see. The same characters, preacher Mendo, he's showing that what I was saying is he's putting characters together and he's making you care about [00:30:00] him. There's a wealth of characters that you could use. Oh yeah. I watched Black Adam to see Hawkman and Dr.
Fate. Oh yeah. Adam Smasher. I was not, I don't forget. Red Tornado. Red Tornado. Smasher was great. What's her name? Cyclone. Cyclones. Cyclone. Good character, not red Tornado cyclone. Yeah. That was who I went to go see black. I'm tired of the rock, but he did a good job. He did a good job.
He did a good job. He did a good job. I have to give him that. He did a good job. I have to give him that. I went to go see, I went to go see Dr. Fate. I went to go see Hawkman. I went to go see Cyclone, Atom Smasher. That's what they've done. They've got such a treasure trove of characters that they can use and just bring out and they're great characters.
I think they killed Dr. Fate way too easy in that movie. And again, all those characters had a relation to JSA. Which, I would have loved to see a spinoff from that Black Adam movie. Sandman, [00:31:00] Jay Garrick as the Flash. Alan Scott as Green Lantern. Wildcat. Wildcat. Come on! Come on!
There's history there. Now, granted, one of my favorite parts of the trailer for Superman is that You're going to see Mr. Terrific on this channel. And that was leading to my point, was what I was saying. It's not just Superman. I'm, I don't know poor Superman as much as you do, Zero. But, I'm glad that they are highlighting these other characters.
Yes, exactly. I'm so glad they're doing that. Yeah, hell, yeah. Characters like Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl Metamorphose in there, and shit Keelix, the damn robot that guards the Fortunes of Solitude, and shit, I'm even happy for Crypto it's not Superman that I'm going to see, that's not what I'm looking forward to.
And the Engineer apparently. Oh, yeah. From the Authorities. Yeah. And, which is gonna lead into, there's supposed to be an Authority movie in this universe. Yep. But. [00:32:00] Any last words on Superman for you? I'm excited for it. Very excited. Thank you. Very and let's give and let's give this dude a chance.
He's not Henry but let's give this dude. He's definitely, you know what? You know what I'm saying? He looks like Clark Kent and when he's in this suit because I when I first saw the first picture, the actor that's playing Superman. Okay. Yeah. Let's give him the first picture of him pulling on his boots and I wasn't too excited about it, but now that I've seen him actually moving, I'm like, you know what?
The kid looks like him. You know what? Give him a chance. And we were talking about that. We were talking about James going to the actual source material. Look at the emblem on his chest. Yeah. That, that is from the 80s. He, I read one thing that James Gunn mentioned about the movie is that a lot of Superman movies, either people focused on Superman or they focus on Clark Kent.
And he said the approach that he took is that you can't really know the character [00:33:00] unless you focus on both. Cause that's initially who Superman is. He is both Superman and Clark Kent. So that's what, and that's what really made Christopher Reeves. Movies. So so good. Because you saw Kent Superman, they were almost two different characters.
. But coming together, they made the entire character. Yeah.
