Welcome to the MedEvidence Monday Minute Radio Show hosted by Kevin Gettings of WSOS St Augustine Radio and powered by Encore Research Group. Each Monday morning, dr Michael Coran calls in to bring you the latest medical updates with insightful discussions. Medevidence is where we help you navigate the real truth behind medical research, with both a clinical and research perspective. So sit back, relax and get ready to learn about the truth behind the data in medicine and health care. This is MedEvidence.

And I know that Dr Coran is a huge fan of the Beach Boys, right All kinds of great stories associated with that.
Speaker 3:

I am. If you recall, we've had a conversation about this unknown woman who I kissed when I was 16 years old at a Beach Boys concert, so I'm still searching for her.
Speaker 2:
0:49
Yeah, we're still searching for her, and if you actually find her, that'll be like a great Hallmark movie, you know. You know, successful doctor finds long lost love from concert 45, 50 years ago.
Speaker 1:
1:02
That's the ultimate.
Speaker 3:
1:04
Hallmark movie.

You would just have to get married in a gazebo, and that would finish it all off. Oh man, dr Michael Coran, joining us here, live on the studio line this morning and talk to us about what's going on. We keep getting more and more indication that COVID has sort of reared its ugly head again with new variants, and also there are issues with RSV and other items, and of course there's flu vaccines that are now being advertised at every Walgreens in public. So we're getting into the season, right, dr Coran.
Speaker 3:
1:33
We are, we are, and it's funny. I had a conversation with my mom about this, who lives in South Florida, and I had to remind her slash scold her that when you get flu-like symptoms you should check it out and not put your head in the sand. And she was actually symptomatic for about a week and did not get herself tested to see what virus she has. Fortunately her symptoms weren't too bad and she's been previously vaccinated. But it makes the point that we often don't know which of these viruses is affecting us, and they're all active in the community as we speak. And one of the nice things about our research programs is that once you're involved, you can come in for a visit and be assessed for COVID flu and RSV. And it's very helpful actually, because, let's say, for example, you're in a COVID slash flu vaccine study and you come in and you learn that you have influenza. Well, there are treatments for that to reduce your symptoms. So these are valuable bits of information that you get as part of the clinical research process.
Speaker 2:
2:35
When it comes to someone that your mom's age or folks that could be over the age of 80, are there particular viruses that are out there right now that trouble you as a medical doctor cardiologist.
Speaker 3:
2:48
Yeah, all three of them that I mentioned are very serious and much worse symptoms typically than just the common cold. And again those are RSV, respiratory sensational virus, influenza in COVID. All three raise their ugly heads and can cause pretty severe illness, especially as you get older.
Speaker 2:
3:06
Yeah, all right. Well, what about all the vaccines that we hear about? I know there's some news media out there about an RSV vaccine for young, I guess, children. Is that something that would be available to someone like your mom, or not? Or where do we stand with that?
Speaker 3:
3:21
Well, we've been working extensively on RSV vaccines. There are none available in the market as we speak, but that should change pretty soon. Just mind everybody. Rsv is a very, very common virus that kids get. In fact, most kids will probably be exposed to it at some point, but it can actually affect us a second time as we get older and they're actually quite devastating in older folks, particularly older folks with their preexisting conditions such as lung disease or cancer, for example. So we've been doing very active research in the RSV space and we don't have a medical treatment for that. As I mentioned, we have treatments for COVID, pactylvid is something that's on the market and we have multiple products now for influenza, but unfortunately nothing for RSV. But it's important to know these things and, again, you can reduce your symptoms and minimize the chance of a hospitalization or a very severe illness if you know what you're dealing with.
Speaker 2:
4:20
So when you get these symptoms, I mean should you go to the ER, Should you call? Your doctor's office and talk to a charge nurse. I mean, what should someone do?
Speaker 3:
4:30
Well, you could go to the ER. They're not going to be totally happy with you. They would prefer that that be dealt with in a doctor's office or an urgent care type clinic. But if you're sick enough, of course, you can always go to the ER. That also can be much more expensive than other alternatives. Again, the nice thing for people in our research programs is that they have an outlet. They can come to our office. They can be tested for these viruses and get a little guide and find is it severe enough to get more intensive medical treatment?
Speaker 2:
4:58
Right. Well, once again, if you have any questions, of course, overall you should get in touch with your doctor. There's some great information now about how you can participate in some really interesting flu vaccine work that you all are working on, right, dr Coran.
Speaker 3:
5:12
There is. Yeah, we're working on multiple projects. We have something in our different locations at any given time. We will have programs in St Augustine and again in a call if you haven't registered with us before in terms of having some email content and more context where we can reach out to you on a regular basis. When a program comes up, please feel free to call us and we'll let you know what's going on.
Speaker 2:
5:38
Yeah, great way to connect too about these particular trials relating to flu vaccine and all the other clinical research that's going on and it's extensive. Right here in St John's County, Encore Docks has offices near Flagler Hospital, right there at 312, near the 312 bridge. You can call this number to learn more and speak to a actual human being 9047301166. That's a local number, 9047301166. Or go to oncoredockscom. That's spelled E-N-C-O-R-E, oncoredockscom. And a shout out too, to a different website we're going to get some really good information at medevidencecom, dr Coran. What do they go to find there?
Speaker 3:
6:20
Well, we like to remind people that there's information and then there's truth, and we like to call medevidence the truth behind the data. There's so many competing healthcare claims out there. It's very, very useful, we believe, to have somebody explain exactly what's going on, what we know about clinical research, what we know about scientific results and how to apply them to your day-to-day life.
Speaker 2:
6:41
Yeah, it's a really great website, easy to use, very intuitive. Medevidencecom. Medevidencecom. Dr Michael Coran. Stay safe, you too, dr Coran.
